Volcanoes, funky Hilo and a great B & B on the Big Island of Hawaii
I forgot just how big the Big Island of Hawaii really is. It’s been a few years since my last visit, and I hadn’t remembered that the Big Island, the most southerly in the Hawaiian chain, was as big as the other main islands put together. Impressive, and so much diversity, too; cities and fun towns and cool villages and fiery volcanoes and so much more. Here’s a photo display of some of my favourite moments….
Lava formations reveal fascinating patterns at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
Checking out the Kilauea Caldera at sunset is a favourite pasttime at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
The Thurston Lava Tube is a way cool (and easy) walk at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
The city of Hilo features fun shops with an emphasis on local and environmentally friendly products.
You’ll find the magical Rainbow Falls (Waianuene in Hawaiian) just outside Hilo in Wailuku RIver State Park. There’s good hiking and swimming above the falls.
Gardeners and lovers of quiet, romantic spots will love Volcano Village Lodge, a great B & B on the Big Island.
Volcano Village Lodge has a bit of an Eastern feel. The units are spacious and beautifully furnished.
Volcano Village Lodge has gardens brimming with exotic flowers you probably won’t find in Canada.
The south coast of the Big Island of Hawaii is a photographer’s dream.
The Big Island town of Na’alehu is billed as the southernmost in the U.S. Note the appearance of Jim’s favourite hula girl….
The town of Kailua-Kona has plenty of relaxed spots to grab a bite and watch the passing parade.
Hulihe’e Palace in Kailua-Kona is a great spot on the waterfront to learn about Hawaii’s history.
