I’m not sure what this means for travel and tourism, but it can’t hurt Canadian efforts to lure more American visitors – and American dollars – north of the border. A new poll by Angus Reid finds that Canadians are more unified than Americans in viewing their country as a caring and safe place to call home, and a positive contributor to the globe. Overall, four-in-five Canadians (78%) say their country is a caring society. Only one-in-three Americans say the same (36%). Is the ArriveCAN app killing Canadian tourism? A new CBC story quotes a border city tourism operator and the mayor of Niagara Falls, Ontario as saying the app has done tremendous damage to a region that relies heavily on American visitation to keep people employed. “When you talk to any businesses in town, they’ll tell you there’s a very small amount of American dollars coming in,” said Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati. “It’s been hurtful, especially after two years of COVID.” Anna Pierce, vice president of Niagara Helicopters, told the network that she’s had several calls from potential U.S. visitors Read more

Mayors in Canadian border cities say the federal goverment’s ArriveCAN app is discouraging American visitors from coming into the country. They’re asking Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to scrap the program. What’s happening right now is Americans are showing up in the minivan with their family at the border with no knowledge of the ArriveCAN app,” Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati said. “There’s a lineup of cars behind them. They can’t get into the country.” Diodati said his city depends on tourism. He estimated that some 10 million Americans would cross the border into Niagara Falls, Ontario every year before the Read more

Americans are feeling more confident about travel, and two in five are likely to take a trip to Canada this year. New research from Destination Canada paints a pretty good picture for summer tourism north of the border, but there are still concerns about COVID-19 and fuel costs. Compared to December of last year, American’s confidence to travel has increased significantly, with 56% saying that they are confident that they can travel safely in the current environment. In December that figure was just 38%. Thirty eight per cent of Americans indicate that they are likely to travel to Canada sometime Read more
