  U.S. Customs pre-clearance is finally coming to the Toronto Island/City Airport. Transport Minister Omar Alghabra today announce a federal government investment of up to $30 million to build a new preclearance facility at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport for United States-bound travellers. The new facility will build capacity for Toronto’s growing business and leisure passenger volumes transiting through Canada’s largest city. The centre is expected to take 18-24 months to complete and should open sometime in 2025. The good news is that the new Air Canada lounge at the Toronto Island Airport is a beauty. The really good news is that Canada’s largest airlines plans “top to bottom” changes to some of its other lounges, including domestic lounges at Toronto Pearson, Montreal Trudeau and Vancouver International. It wasn’t as bad as calling out the army to deal with a snowfall, but shutting down Pearson Airport on Tuesday was a very bad signal to send out. I understand that it was NOT business as usual on Tuesday. The cold snap was incredible and conditions were appalling for both operations and people. It’s completely understandable that flights would be cancelled, both arriving and departing. And it’s understandable that luggage would be delayed and other issues would pop up. But that doesn’t mean you have to halt the entire shebang and officially declare that you’ve shuttered Canada’s largest airport. Read more
