One of the best Canada trips I’ve taken was my driving tour from Thunder Bay down to Toronto about this time two years ago. The people were marvellous, the inns and B & B’s lovely, the food excellent and the scenery spectacular. Here’s a bit of a Simcoe Day/August long weekend ode to some of the more northerly (depending on your perspective) parts of a great province.

Kakabeka Falls are the second highest in Ontario and make a mighty impressive sight. JIM BYERS PHOTO

Ouimet Canyon is a truly fantastic spot near Thunder Bay that doesn’t get nearly enough attention. JIM BYERS PHOTO

The Terry Fox Monument near Thunder Bay is a stirring tribute to a Canadian hero.

The Wawa Goose is one of Ontario’s most iconic sights. Last I heard they were still trying to raise money to fix her up. JIM BYERS PHOTO

The Lake Superior shoreline also features tons of long, nearly empty beaches to explore. JIM BYERS PHOTO

I fell in love with Killarney Provincial Park when I visited last year. JIM BYERS PHOTO

The Lodge at Pine Cove offers luxury accommodations and great food in a beautiful wilderness setting on the French River. JIM BYERS PHOTO

Okay, it’s not scenic. But I found this graffiti amusing on the side of the Trans-Canada HIghway along Lake Superior. JIM BYERS PHOTO

This was taken on Simcoe Day a couple years ago, in the town that bears the man’s name. It’s not Northern Ontario, but I enjoyed dressing up for the day and getting stared at as I roamed around town.
