Kauai Rebound: Fabulous State Parks And North Shore Hiking Trails To Re-Open Soon

If you love Kauai as much as I do, there’s great news.

The Kauai Department of Land and Natural Resources says Ha’ena State Park, the incredible Kalalau Trail and Napali Coast State Wilderness Park will re-open in early to mid-June.

They also say the north shore section of the Kuhio Highway is set to open May 1.

The north shore of Kauai was hit by massive flooding in April of 2018, with significant damage to the Kuhio Highway west of Hanalei.

In a story posted at www.thegardenisland.com, one local says the five landslides that took place on the 11-mile Kalalau Trail have been cleared and that workers have been clearing the trail.

“It’s looking good,” the man said. “It’s maintained and getting in good condition.”

A volunteer group called the Friends of the Kalalau Trail has conducted twice-monthly work days since February to clear the first two miles of the trail, from its beginning at Ke’e Beach to Hanakapiai Stream, the only section that is open to people without an overnight permit, the garden island website stated.

Ke’e Beach is a beautiful stretch of sand at Haena State Park, with wonderful snorkelling and gentle surf in summer.

I’ve never hiked the entire trail, but the first couple miles are truly amazing; with thick jungles, rocky outcroppings and beautiful coastal views of cliffs that plunge into the blue Pacific.

Even if you’re not a swimmer or hiker, the drive from Hanalei to Ha’ena State Park is a beauty; with towering green mountains on your left, the endless Pacific on your right and several beautiful, quiet beaches you can stroll or simply admire.

The Limahuli Garden and Preserve is a gorgeous spot to stop for anyone who admires beautiful scenery and tropical plants.

Hanalei town is a great spot for casual shopping and dining. I love Chicken In A Barrel for roasted chicken. The Tahiti Nui is a great restaurant/bar with live music and was featured in the movie “The Descendants,” starring George Clooney.

The Princeville Resort (formerly the St. Regis Princeville) is just a few minutes from Hanalei and is a truly magnificent resort that offers incredible views, terrific food and a lovely spa.
