I guess I’m not the only one promoting travel within Canada right now.
Just a couple days after I published my book, “Ontario Escapes: 19 Great Places to Visit Right Now,” I got a note saying that Destination Canada, which promotes Canadian tourism around the world, has “called upon a few trusted Canadian ambassadors to remind us of the many exceptional travel experiences we have in our own back yards and across the country.”
Rick Mercer’s rant on travelling in Canada
CBC personality Rick Mercer, a true Canadian treasure, celebrates Canadians’ love of travel with a rant calling on us to explore our own backyards this year. Watch it here.
Canada Travel Pact with Gregory Charles
Media personality, musician, actor, dancer extraordinaire Gregory Charles reflects on his days as a tour guide in Quebec and calls on Canadians to make a pact to stay home and explore Canada this year. Watch it here.
“This year is an open invitation and a great opportunity for Canadians to explore their own country and experience the incredible people and places – and connect to what it truly means to be Canadian and discover why more than 22 million international visitors travelled to Canada last year. It is also a great chance for Canadians to support the people that make up this sector with 10% of all jobs in Canada being related to tourism.
It’s critical that we all do what we can to support Canadian tourism, so this is terrific.
Destination Canada is currently investing $30 million with Provincial and Territorial Marketing Organizations to support the recovery of communities, as well as $1.95 million for the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada’s marketing efforts.
Here are some other initatives undertaken by Destination Canada:
- Interactive map: travellers can hover over the provinces and territories to see current travel restrictions and traveller self-isolation requirements.
- Here are 10 starting tips to help travellers unpack Canada’s new travel landscape and get them packing for trips to come.
- Check out their list of the best road trips in Canada’s 10 provinces and two of its three territories (to date, there are no roads into Nunavut or between its communities)
- Explore their updated traveller website for other relevant links and resources.

Rick Mercer’s rant for travelling in Canada is terrific! He’s absolutely right and his humour is wonderful at the same time, its excellent that Canadians think about their other fellow Canadians, and then we take action and make something happen. Good on ya Rick and Peter Mansbridge you too !
