It became a little tougher today for Canadians to travel.
Just after midnight Eastern Time today, December 21, new rules brought in by the government of Canada to combat the Omicron variant took effect. Under the new regulations, any Canadian who leaves the country must submit a negative PCR test before they’re allowed to return, even if they’re only gone for a few hours.
The government was allowing Canadians who left the country for less than 72 hours to get tested before they left on their trip. But the ruling Liberals passed new legislation last week that revoked that policy.
The Trudeau government last week also issued an advisory against international travel, saying the Omicron variant is too dangerous and that Canadians risk getting infected while abroad. Officials also said they can’t necessarily protect Canadians who get sick while out of the country.
Tourism and travel industry executives have railed against the government’s plans, saying travel is being unfairly singled out and that the health risks for travellers are minimal.
