Flight Woes Growing: More Than 300 Canadian Flights Cancelled Today

Airline staffing issues and weather problems continue to bedevil would-be travellers in Canada and the U.S. New York City and Boston have been hardest hit today.

As of 3:45 p.m. Eastern Time on Friday, January 7, the website flightaware.com reports 328 cancellations for Canadian airlines for the day. It also said nearly one-half of all flights for snowy Halifax, Nova Scotia have been cancelled today.

According to the site, Air Canada Jazz alone has cancelled 150 flights, which represents 30% of their total for the day. WestJet Encore has cancelled 59 flights, or 31%, the site said.

For Air Canada, the cancellations stood at 46 for the day, or 11%, while it was 41 cancellations (16%) for WestJet.

Flight Aware said 16 Porter Airlines flights were cancelled (21%), while 12 were cancelled for Swoop (15%) and four for Air Canada Rouge (5%).

As of 3:45 p.m. ET, there already were 2,593 cancellations within, into, or out of the United States today. That’s higher than the total for all of Thursday.

Flight Aware said 36% of all flights have been cancelled so far at LaGuardia in New York city and at at 42% Boston Logan Airport. Twenty three per cent of flights were cancelled at both Newark Liberty and John F. Kennedy airports.

Twenty two flights (47%) were cancelled at Halifax-Stanstead, where there’s a winter storm warning in effect. Seventy eight flights had been cancelled at Toronto Pearson (17%), while 38 (16%) were cancelled at Montreal-Trudeau airport. The cancellations stood at 24 for Calgary (11%), 15 for Edmonton (13%) and 18 for Vancouver (6%).
