WestJet Trims Eastern Canada Service This Winter: No Flights out of PEI, Fredericton

WestJet is trimming flights in and out of four Eastern Canadian destinations this winter, but adding more western Canadian flights and sun destination routes.

The Calgary-based airline said this week it will end service to Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, on Nov. 15. (Swoop, a WestJet, subsidiary, will fly in and out of PEI, however).

WestJet said it also is cutting winter flights in and out of Quebec City, Fredericton, and Sydney, Nova Scotia.

In a news release, WestJet said the changes are part of a strategic focus shift to concentrate more resources in the west, and to boost sun destination flights.

“We are undertaking these strategic changes in a responsible manner and it was critical to give our guests and the communities as much advance notice as possible,” said John Weatherill, WestJet’s chief commercial officer.

Yahoo News sayd WestJet plans to release the airline’s full winter schedule in August. Managers have said that schedule will include a significant number of sun destinations with flights out of Eastern Canada.

“It’s certainly not the news we wanted to hear, but at least they are keeping Swoop here this winter with three flights per week to Toronto, similar to what WestJet would normally do that time of year,” said Charlottetown Airport CEO Doug Newson. “Not the same product, but good to have the seat capacity to Toronto.”
