Air Canada Says Flight Delays, Congestion Issues Should Ease Soon

The flood of delayed and cancelled flights and lost luggage that has marred the resumption of air travel will continue to recede through the rest of the year as hiring and training programs gear up, says Amos Kazzaz, Air Canada’s chief financial officer.

In a story in today’s Globe and Mail, Kazzaz said airport disruptions in Canada are improving and are unlikely to extend into the new year, pointing to the reduced numbers of delays, cancellations and baggage complaints in the second week of August.

The website flightaware.com reports that only one per cent of Air Canada flights were cancelled on Tuesday, but that 52% were delayed. Nine per cent of Air Canada Jazz flights were cancelled, while 50% were delayed.

For Porter Airlines, eight per cent of flights were cancelled and 45% delayed, so the problems weren’t with Air Canada alone.

“As time goes by, we certainly don’t expect to see this sort of disruption into 2023. I think it will continue to improve,” Kazzaz told an investors conference Tuesday, the Globe reports.

On a related note, flightaware reports that 37% of outgoing flights from Toronto Pearson were delayed Tuesday, compared with 39% of incoming flights.
