The World’s Most Bike-Friendly Cities: Europe Dominates, Montreal Tops in North America

An insurance company called Luko has looked at the most bike-friendly cities in the world, and Europe came out smelling like a rose.

Nine of the top ten bike-friendly cities were in Europe, led by Utrecht, Holland. North American cities fared poorly, with Montreal the only entry in the top 20 (16th overall). Vancouver came 37th, while San Francisco was the top U.S. city in 39th position. Portland, Oregon was 41st and Seattle 50th.

Cities were ranked on a variety of issues, including bike accident rates, theft rates, weather, bike usage and infrastructure. Holland had two cities in the top five, while Germany had three in the top 10.

Toronto didn’t make the top 90, which I find quite surprising. Cities such as Lagos, Moscow and Bangkok made the list, but not Canada’s largest city, which has a fair number of bike lanes (more than enough if you ask car drivers).

Anyway, here’s the top 10:

1. Utrecht, Holland
2. Munster, Germany
3. Antwerp, Belgium
4. Copenhagen, Denmark
5. Amsterdam, Holland
6. Malmo, Sweden
7. Hangzhou, China
8. Bern, Switzerland
9. Bremen, Germany
10. Hannover, Germany
