Retire And Live on A Cruise Ship, California Snow and Eugene Levy Goes Luxe; Travel Notebook

Eugene Levy is living large as he records his new TV show. I’ve also got update on a retirement cruise ship, a Black History initiative for New York, snow in Hollywood, and news about Singapore cancelling its Vancouver flights.

RETIRE AND LIVE ON A CRUISE SHIP

Here’s a great way to retire; live on a cruise ship that sails the world. Business Insider says Victoria Cruises Line is chartering a nearly 30-year-old cruise vessel formerly owned by Holland America for use as an adults-only residential cruise ship.

The cost starts at $8,000 USD per month for two people and guests have to sign a lease of at least six months.

EUGENE LEVY LIVING IN STYLE

For a guy who doesn’t like to travel, Eugene Levy is living a pretty good life on the road. USA Today reports that Levy has stayed at some of the most posh hotels in the world as he tapes his TV show, “The Reluctant Traveler.” The show has taken him to luxury hotels in such destinations as Venice, The Maldives, Tokyo and Lisbon.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SNOW

CNN reports a major snowfall in California has taken residents by surprise. As much as 40 inches of snow fell at Big Bear Lake, a mountain resort town east of the city of Los Angeles, and snow also closed part of Highway 17 in the Santa Cruz Mountains, about an hour south of San Francisco. There were even reports of light snow around the Hollywood sign , just above Los Angeles.

A spokesperson for Singapore Airlines told Daily Hive that it will suspend operations between Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and Singapore Changi International Airport (SIN) effective October 2023.

NEW YORK STATE LAUNCHES BLACK TRAVEL PLAN

New York state Governor Kathy Hochul has announced plans for an I LOVE NY Black travel initiative, designed to grow New York State tourism and encourage Black traveler visitation. The Governor made the announcement at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater as part of the state’s commemoration of Black History Month. The program will build on the success of the state’s tourism programs like I LOVE NY LGBTQ and Accessible NY which highlight destinations of interest to and supportive of specific travel communities.

PUERTO RICO SATISFACTION

A comprehensive year-long study that included interviews with more than 1,600 travelers to Puerto Rico indicates that visitors to the Spanish-speaking U.S. territory enjoyed their travel experience.

Discover Puerto Rico announced that a highlight of the study’s findings is that 98% of visitors were satisfied with their experience on the island, with 95 percent estimating they will return in the future. Fewer than 15 percent experienced concerns during their stay.

I’m heading to San Juan on March 5 for a three-day mid-year board meeting of the Society of American Travel Writers (SATW). Haven’t been since a brief cruise ship visit in 2004, so I’m very much looking forward to it.

TRAVEL TO BRITAIN NEARLY BACK TO PRE-PANDEMIC LEVELS

London’s Heathrow Airport forecasts it will carry 58-73 million passengers in 2023, which is around 90% of pre-pandemic levels, Reuters reports. But it says business travel is still lagging. Business travellers represented 28% of passenger numbers during the final three months of 2022, compared with 32% in the same period pre-pandemic.
