A New Airline Linking Canada and the Caribbean, Plus Audio Books on Air Canada

A new airline is coming soon that promises low fares from Canada to the Caribbean.

Arajet, a discount airline based in the Dominican Republic, says it will launch flights to the D.R. this fall from both Toronto and Montreal.

Canadian Press notes that the announcement by the year-old carrier marks the latest entrant to an already crowded field of low-cost airlines, including Lynx and Flair, and comes two weeks after U.S. budget carrier Breeze Airways made a pitch to Quebecers bound for Florida.

By the end of next year, Flair Airlines aims to beef up its fleet to 26 planes from 21 now, and Lynx Air to 17 aircraft from its current nine, said CP.

Arajet officials say they’re counting on Canadians to not only fly to their hub in Santo Domingo, but to use the city as a stopping point for flights to other destinations in the Caribbean and Central or South America. Their website lists flights in and out of Guatemala, Curacao, Santiago (Chile), Bogota (Colombia), and many other cities.

Service to Santo Domingo from Toronto starts Oct. 24, while direct flights rom Montreal begin Nov. 7. One-way fares start at $98. Fares also are bundled into three categories; smart, extra and comfort.
