Thanksgiving Holiday Chaos: Niagara Falls Bridge Crash Sparks Travel Problems

A violent car explosion at the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls, New York is causing major traffic headaches on one of the busiest travel days of the year.

A car that was apparently carrying two people accelerated on the approach to the Rainbow Bridge, flew into the air and exploded earlier today. Multiple reports say both people were killed.

Details were scarce but CNN reported the car had earlier been seen in the parking lot of a nearby U.S. casino.

CNN at one point said Buffalo Niagara International Airport has closed to both international arriving and departing flights. But Buffalo Niagara Airport’s Twitter/X feed says they are open, albeit with increased security.

“The Buffalo Niagara International Airport is open and fully operational. Additionally security measures are in place until further notice,” officials said in their tweet.

Every car coming into the Buffalo International Airport is being screened with bomb-detecting dogs amid heightened security in response to the incident at the , a transportation official told CNN.

The Rainbow Bridge, Peace Bridge, Lewiston-Queenston Bridge and Whirlpool Bridge all were closed at one stage but only the Rainbow Bridge was closed as of 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time.

With U.S. Thanksgiving being tomorrow, many Canadians are heading to the States today to visit friends and relatives, while some Americans are likely driving or flying to Canada.
