Are Canadian Hotels Gouging Customers for the World Cup? Hotels.Com Says Prices Skyrocketing

With just under 100 days until the World Cup, the countdown is officially on to lock in a place to stay for the games. Hotel rates and searches are surging among Canadian travellers around Team Canada match dates in host cities – and even in surrounding areas – according to data from Hotels.com.

Team Canada Match in Toronto on June 12

• Travellers can expect to see rates 2 to 3 times higher in Toronto across hotel types with some 2-star hotels charging regular 5-star rates around the match date (versus March 2026, according to Hotels.com)

• Accommodation searches are up 230 per cent for Team Canada’s first game in Toronto on June 12 (opposing team TBA)

• Data also shows Canadian travellers are also looking beyond Toronto, with searches up 20 per cent for nearby Hamilton.

• Hamilton hotel rates are approximately 1.5 to 2 times higher across hotel types.

Team Canada Match in Vancouver on June 18/24

• Travellers can expect even higher increases at Vancouver hotels across hotel types with rates 3 to 8 times the cost around match dates (versus March 2026, according to Hotels.com)

• Searches are up 165 per cent around the Vancouver June 18 match (vs Qatar) and up 230 per cent around the Vancouver June 24 match (vs Switzerland).

• Nearby Surrey is also seeing a notable 45 per cent spike in searches for accommodation around those dates.

• Surrey hotel rates are approximately 1.5 to 2 times higher across hotel types

Just for fun, I went on to hotels.com to compare a two-night stay in downtown Toronto for May versus June. (I think comparing June rates to May, when the weather is nicer, is better and more fair than comparing prices to March, when things tend to be a bit slow in the city and rates aren’t as high as mid-June).

I found a room at the Doubletree by Hilton Downtown Toronto would cost a guest $452.50 CAD for May 11-13, but a sizable $710 CAD per night from June 11-13 when the World Cup is one. For the Fairmont Royal York, hotels.com showed me a room from May 11-13 would be $694 per night, but from June 11-13 would cost $857 per night.

Put in percentage terms, the Royal York would cost 23.5 per cent more from June 11-13 versus the same dates in May. For the Doubletree, the June rate is 57 per cent higher than the rate in May.
