Great Canadian Hotels for Summer, Including Vancouver, Toronto, Banff and Montreal

Canada is blessed with dozens of top-notch hotels, and I’ve been privileged to spend the night in many, if not most of them. Here’s one travel writer’s look at some of the best options Canada has to offer.

VANCOUVER: It’s not fancy, but The Burrard is a stylish and affordable spot on the edge of downtown Vancouver. Rooms aren’t large, but it’s a fun environment, and close to downtown, Davie Village and Granville Island. BC Place, which is hosting Vancouver’s World Cup football games, is only a kilometre away.

BANFF: The Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel is the granddaddy (or grandmommy) of them all; a regal, historic property on a hill overlooking Banff’s remarkable scenery. You feel special the minute you enter the lobby. There’s also a spectacular spa and fabulous food.

SASKATOON: The Delta Bessborough is another remarkable, castle-like hotel that transports you to another time. The hotel is situated on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River in Saskatoon, one of my favourite Canadian cities.

TORONTO: The Four Seasons Hotel Toronto s a remarkable place to stay in the posh Yorkville district; subdued but sexy. The on-site Boulud Restaurant is divine. The hotel was recently given a five-star rating by Forbes and five-diamond rating by AAA/CAA. It’s an easy commute to Toronto Stadium for World Cup football fans.

MONTREAL: Another relatively affordable and fun hotel to check out is Le Petit Hotel Notre Dame. Rooms feel very European, and there’s a killer coffee bar in the lobby. Try a meal at their sister property the William Gray Hotel, where you’ll find a fabulous rooftop bar and restaurant.

HALIFAX: The Muir, a Marriott Autograph Collection property, is a stunning treat for the senses. Located steps form the city’s magical waterfront, the hotel brings a new level of luxury and style to one of Canada’s best cities. There’s also a tremendous culinary program.

NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR: Fogo Island Inn is a truly one-of-a-kind hotel on remote Fogo Island. Started by a local woman who made a fortune in New York City, the hotel features furniture, quilts and other bits fashioned by area residents. The food is exquisite, and the area one of the most fascinating in Canada.
