Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I know. But sometimes I can’t help but get riled up about silly travel lists. For example, there’s this that I found today on a website called mentalfloss.com. The story says a group called Online Mortgage Advisor looked at something called the Golden Ratio (yeah, I’ve never heard of it, either), which measures shapes and building sizes that are pleasing to the eye, and then ranked world cities based on that. It’s interesting, and there are some worthy candidates on the list. But simply focusing on pleasing architectural shapes warps things so Read more
Architecture
Vienna is rightfully famous for its polished palaces and prancing Lipizzaner stallions, not to mention the rich, pure voices of the Vienna Boy’s Choir. There are historic churches from the Middle Ages and homes lived in by the likes of Ludwig van Beethoven and Johann Strauss. But there’s also a rich, vibrant modern side to this city, with rooftop bars that blast pulsating dance tunes, wildly inventive architecture, and funky shops based on Monty Python sketches. Tour guide Alexa Brauner, an engaging and enthusiastic art lover, recently took me on a three-hour walking tour that included both the old and Read more
Amazing history. Glorious outdoor adventures. Stunnning architecture. Lively art galleries. And terrific food and drinks. St. Augustine, Florida has been entertaining visitors for half a century, and it shows no signs of slowing down. Here’s a way to spend a great couple of days in the city. With summer right around the corner, people are beginning to plan their summer trips. Here are a few reasons why Milwaukee should be on everyone’s list for a summer escape. The city has a deep dedication to the arts and history. Like the first-of-its-kind Saint Kate – The Arts Hotel that broadly celebrates arts in its many forms (including an entire culinary experience) and the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra’s new symphony center that was achieved by only completing a historic construction feat on a nearly 90-year-old theatre. I can’t forget to mention the iconic Pfister Hotel that continues to be the Read more
The food is terrific. The renovated rooms are clean and bright. And the new design gives the feel of a boutique, downtown hotel. The 30-year-old Sheraton Gateway Hotel at Toronto Pearson Airport is undergoing a $30 million renovation, and it’s quite special. There was nothing wrong with the old hotel, which is a mere 40 or 50 steps from Terminal 3. But it was time for a change from sturdy, wooden headboards and black leather chairs and clunky wooden desks, and they’ve pretty much gutted the entire property. What’s here now is a sparkling, beautifully designed hotel that feels to Read more
