Time Magazine (remember them?) is out with a list of its top 50 destinations for 2023. Some of my fave places made the list, including Vancouver, Vienna, surprising Tampa and the Caribbean island of Dominica, where I spent five days in January. Also making the list on the Canadian side of the ledger was Churchill, Manitoba, which I haven’t had the pleasure of visiting. Business travel is back in a big way. American Express Global Business Travel (Amex GBT), the world’s leading BTB travel platform, told company investors on a recent fourth-quarter 2022 earnings call that they expect total business travel spending to grow by 24% in 2023 to reach over a trillion dollars. It’s a move that will certainly spark renewed interest in Chinese visits to Canada, and Canadian visits to Asia. The Canadian government today (March 17) ended travel restrictions on passengers flying in from the People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong and Macao. The prestigious Skytrax awards for World’s Best Airport are out, and it’s a mixed bag for Canada. Vancouver International rose from 28th spot in 2022 to 20th in this year’s rankings, while Montreal Trudeau leapt from 66th to 45th; a gain of 21 points. Toronto Pearson, the airport Canadians love to hate, plummeted from 43rd in the world last year to 64th this time around.
