Dominica is garnering tons of headlines these days. Conde Nast Travel recently named it one of the 16 best islands in the world. Travel + Leisure just this week named Dominica the top island in the Caribbean and 8th best in the world, and named the island’s Secret Bay Resort as the top hotel in the Caribbean (and 25th best in the world). I first visited five or six years ago, and got to return for a five-day visit in January. It’s a tremendous, relatively undiscovered island with tremendous hiking and diving. The best thing I sampled were the cakes (some with fresh ginger, pear and lime) from a stand called “The Cake Witch.” Crave Kitchen and Wine Bar served up a perfect plate of duck confit when I was in Read more

I recently started a regular feature called “Canada Shorts” for people who want travel tips but don’t have a lot of time. I also posted a “Europe Shorts” item on the weekend that was focused on Lisbon, Portugal. Today I’ll start my “Florida Shorts” item with a look at the top things to see and do near Crystal River, a lovely, natural part of The Sunshine State. CRYSTAL RIVER, FLORIDA – The main attraction in this area a couple hours north of Tampa is the fresh spring water that bubbles up from the Florida limestone, creating crystal-clear creeks and rivers.
