Lists of great travel destinations are always arbitrary. The tariff spat between the United States and Canada may be having an effect on cross-border travel. Statistics Canada says the number of Canadians who returned to Canada from the U.S. by car last month was down 23% from February of last year, falling to 1.2 million. Oh, Canada. A newly conducted study reveals Canada as the world’s most desired destination for relocation. And it’s not even close. Canada secured the top spot globally with 68.72 searches per 100 million capita, more than double that of second-place Australia (31.05). Talk about a landslide win. The latest ranking of countries for travel and tourism puts Canada just outside the top 10. The 2024 Travel and Tourism Development Index from the World Economic Forum gives top spot to the United States, followed by Spain and Japan. Canada came in 11th, receiving relatively low scores for tourism infrastructure, openness to travel and tourism, cultural resources and price competitiveness. Canadian tourism is setting an ambitious goal to move up the tourism ladder. Whether it can be achieved is something nobody will know for several years.
