The prestigious Skytrax awards for World’s Best Airport are out, and it’s a mixed bag for Canada. Vancouver International rose from 28th spot in 2022 to 20th in this year’s rankings, while Montreal Trudeau leapt from 66th to 45th; a gain of 21 points. Lynx Air today (March 13) announced the addition of Fredericton to its network from June 12, 2023, offering affordable links between New Brunswick, Ontario and Alberta. Canada’s new ultra-affordable airline will offer three services a week between New Brunswick’s most central airport, Fredericton International Airport (YFC) and both Calgary International Airport (YYC) and Toronto Pearson International (YYZ). WestJet’s controversial takeover of Sunwing is set to be approved today by the Trudeau government. WestJet also has been given federal licenses for flights to Hong Kong, the Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia. The Globe and Mail this morning (March 10) reported that the announcement will be made today, providing WestJet with a huge increase in its share of the packaged vacation business.  Calgary-based WestJet and Toronto-based Sunwing announced the proposed merger in March, 2022. March is roaring in like a lion, and Canadian and American travellers are paying the price. A so-called “mega-storm” lashed the Greater Toronto Area with high winds and heavy, wet snow that reached depths of 35 centimeters. Roughly one-third of flights had been cancelled at Toronto Pearson as of  2 p.m. EST today (Saturday, March 4), nearly 1,000 flights in all. A group of influential Toronto business and travel leaders are calling for Canada to quickly create its own trusted-traveller program, a move it said will boost Toronto Pearson Airport and boost the local economy.
