If the Canadian travel industry is counting on public pressure to get Ottawa to ease travel restrictions, they’re in a bit of trouble. A new poll from Angus Reid finds the Canadian public is still high on testing and vaccination requirements for travel outside of the country. The poll found that slightly more than three in five Canadians are in favour of testing at the border. Asked if they support mandatory COVID testing to travel internationally or cross the border with the U.S., 61% said they’re in favour. Not only is Florida bouncing back from the pandemic, but they’re shooting past 2019 numbers. The vast majority of Canadians support measures aimed at controlling the Omicron variant of COVID-19, and we’re mostly staying home this holiday season, a new poll reports. A new study from Leger polling and marketing, in conjunction with Canadian Press, also finds that Canadians and Americans think rather differently about COVID-19, at least in some respects. The latest poll, conducted online from Dec. 3 to 5, finds that a whopping 87% of Canadians support the idea of “going back to mandatory testing for all travellers coming into Canada.” For the U.S. the number was 81%. Canadians can expect vaccine passports for international travel in the coming days. There’s also more help coming for trouble tourism businesses, and potential vaccines on the horizon for Canadian children. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau today (Oct. 21) said fully-vaccinated Canadians travelling overseas or using airplanes or interprovincial trains will soon have to show a vaccine passport.
