Canadian Airports a “National Embarrassment,” 60% of Canadians Avoiding Travel

Seven in ten Canadians say airport delays across the country are a “national embarrassment,” while nearly 60% say they’re not travelling until the situation improves, says a new Ipsos poll.

The embarrassment is bad for Canada’s image, but the idea that six in ten Canadians are avoiding travel right now is troublesome for a Canadian tourism and travel industry that’s just beginning to get back on its feet following a two-year-plus pandemic.

The poll was conducted exclusively for Global News.

“The poll definitely suggests there’s a lot of anger right now and uncertainty around travel,” Gregory Jack, vice-president of Ipsos Public Affairs, told Global News.

“Overall, we definitely see a very high level of concern among Canadians in what’s happening at our airports, and they are spreading the blame around pretty equally.”

Toronto Pearson and Montreal Trudeau airport have been particularly hard hit by delays and cancellations. Lost or delayed luggage issues also have frustrated travellers from Canada and around the world.

Only 37% of those polled said the Trudeau government is doing enough to address airport cancellations and delays. Thirty five per cent said the airlines aren’t doing enough.

The Ipsos poll found that nearly 40% of Canadians believe that the federal government, airports, airlines and travellers themselves are equally to blame for the recent spate of delays, Global News said.

I am starting to wonder if our PM really does want to push his climate change agenda further by making it so difficult to travel. He certainly has not seemed care about tourism as an industry very much over the past few years. I have had to travel to the U.S. lately so I fly out of Buffalo or drive. Being forced to fly within Canada next month. I am dreading it. I have encouraged my visiting guests to fly into Buffalo when possible.
