U.S. President Joe Biden wants American lawmakers to limit certain airline and hotel fees.
Speaking before a session of the White House Competition Committee, Biden said Congress should restrict airline seat-assignment fees imposed on families trying to sit together, so-called resort fees that many hotels now tack on to the bill, excessive service charges on tickets for concerts and sporting events, and fees to switch or cancel internet, cable or cellphone service.
These unfair fees add up,” he said. “Some airlines charge extra to pick your seat, including for parents who just want to sit next to their child on a plane.
“They charge extra – you don’t know that going in though – and it’s wrong.”
I don’t know if he’s going to order his staff to follow through, but it’s refreshing to see the president of the United States standing up for the little guy; something you rarely see in Canada. Oh, the New Democratic Party says the right things, but they don’t push Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal party to do anything. And you never hear Trudeau say boo about airline fees or resort fees.
CANADA JETLINES POISED FOR EXPANSION TO EUROPE AND THE CARIBBEAN
Canada Jetlines has been a busy little airline.
The airline began service late last year with flights between Toronto Pearson and Vancouver, as well as Calgary. They have since added flights between Toronto and Las Vegas and between Pearson Airport and Melbourne Orlando International Airport.
Now they’ve been given approval by the Canadian Transportation Agency for an even more robust expansion. The CTA this past week gave the official okay for Canada Jetlines to begin offering flights to Europe, Jamaica, Cuba, Mexico, Saint Lucia, the Dominican Republic and Antigua & Barbuda.
There was no word from Canada Jetlines on when they might offer the new flights.
Porter Airlines is expected to announce its own expansion plans for the Caribbean and Mexico using their new Embraer jets.
It’s a crowded field of competitors, but that should be good news for Canadian consumers looking for a deal on a sun destination holiday.
