Cheapest European Cities to Fly Into

Thinking of a trip to Europe this fall? Try flying into Oslo, Edinburgh or maybe Madrid if you want to save money.

With help from Expedia, Travel + Leisure magazine has issued a list of 11 European airports and computed the cost of an airline ticket today, compared with during the peak summer months.

Here’s what they found, with the percentage decline in ticket prices from summer to today in parentheses.

Oslo (-40%).

Stockholm (-35%)

Hamburg (-35%)

Ibiza (-35%)

Copenhagen (-30%)

Madrid (-30%)

Dublin (-25%)

Brussels (-25%)

Geneva (-25%)

Edinburgh (-25%)

Florence (-20%)

That’s a fun list. Not to rain on anyone’s parade, but it’s important to note that some of those cities can be quite expensive for visitors. You might save on a ticket to Oslo right now, but dining out is often very expensive in Scandinavian cities. On the other hand, Expedia shows a room at the Radisson Blu hotel in Oslo for just $185 CAD ($136 USD) on November 1.

I’ve often advocated for visiting Europe in the fall or the off-season. Unless you’re going for a beach holiday, autumn is a great time to go, with cheaper prices and also a lot fewer tourists.

I was happy to see Edinburgh on the list as I visited the city last month and had a wonderful time. Here’s a story I posted last week on great tours to try in the city.

I was also pleasantly surprised to see Madrid and Florence on the list, as well as Ibiza. All three are popular destinations that should have decent weather this time of year.

Here’s a story I wrote a few years ago on great European places to visit in the off-season.
