New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles Named Top 3 U.S. Cities in New Report; California Places Nine Cities in Top 100

A new report from the highly respected Resonance Consultancy group and Ipsos gives New York City the nod as best city in the United States.

Chicago came second, with Los Angeles placing third.

San Francisco was number six, making California the only state with two cities in the top 10. San Diego just missed coming 11th, while San Jose was 26th and Sacramento 47th. Four other California cities were in the 90-100 range.

New York City was ranked first for livability, lovability and prosperity, as well as first for shopping and sights/landmarks. Here’s some of what the group had to say about The Big Apple:

“NYC has topped America’s Best Cities since our inaugural ranking. In 2024, it is U.S. urban recovery writ large, with a dizzying roster of new shows, hotels and parks—and record real estate prices. But the Big Apple is always worth the price of admission, especially in these glory days.”

Chicago came out 2nd in livability, third in prosperity and fourth in lovability. It was first for convention center and second for nightlife.

“America’s great Midwest metropolis pulses with infrastructure and affordability that eludes many other iconic global cities,” Resonance said.

Los Angeles came second in the U.S. in prosperity, third in lovability and sixth in livability. L.A. restaurants were named number one in the U.S., while the city was ranked second for museums. The food scene in L.A. is astonishing, and I’m told the city has more museums than any city in the U.S.

The home of America’s most ambitious museums (trailing only NYC in our ranking) is demanding the world come and visit, with vital exhibitions already launched and massive openings and expansions planned in the months ahead. In Westwood, the Hammer Museum at UCLA reopened last year after its two-decade-long
project transforming the campus, anchored by the new Lynda and Stewart Resnick Cultural Center at the gateway to Westwood Village.”
