Canadians are still paying more for groceries, but the cost of airline tickets is dropping. New Statistics Canada figures published this week show the average air ticket in January of this year cost 14.3% less than in January 2023. January average airline prices also were down 23.7% from December of 2024, StatsCan said, “as holiday demand gave way to stay-at-home habits,” The latest news continues a trend for air prices in Canada that began last spring. Air Canada today announced significantly expanded service to Europe for next summer, including a new, year-round route between Montreal and Madrid, expanded service to Italy and earlier seasonal start-up flights between Toronto and Edinburgh, Scotland. Canada’s largest airline said it plans to operate 100 per cent of its peak summer 2019 trans-Atlantic capacity next year, taking full advantage of the robust recovery in its largest international market. After a summer 2022 air travel season filled with delays and disruptions, NBC News says air travelers should prepare for what could be more of the same this summer. In an interview with CNBC, Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian said customers are more interested than ever in getting out of town this summer.
