The Omicron variant is wreaking havoc with Canadian airlines. A day after Air Canada Vacations said it was trimming flights and packages to a dozen or so sun destinations, Transat A.T. said it’s slashing its winter routes by 30%, and Porter Airlines said they’ll likely have to make cuts of their own. Flight cancellations continue to trouble U.S. and Canadian travelers today, but it’s not as bad as yesterday. As of 1 p.m. Eastern Time today (January 4), flightaware.com reports there have been 3,482 cancellations around the world today. For flights within, to or from the U.S., that figure was at 1,367. It’s another day filled with cancellations and delays for U.S. airlines. Canadian airlines are doing better than some of their American counterparts, but WestJet is still having some problems. The website flightaware.com reports a whopping 54% of flights scheduled to go in or out of Washington Reagan Airport have been cancelled today. For Baltimore Washington airport it’s 31%. Cold weather is wreaking havoc again for Canadian air passengers today. WestJet issued a statement this afternoon to say they’ve had to consolidate roughly 15% of their flights through the end of January. According to statistics from flightaware.com, which tracks flights around the world, there have been early 200 flights cancelled today involving just five Canadian airports. Toronto Pearson, by far the largest airport in Canada, was listed as having 53 cancellations, while Vancouver was at 51 and Calgary close behind at 48.
