Destination Analysts has released a new poll that shows Americans are ready to travel again. And that’s good news for the industry. The company issued a press release today (January 3) to say that the Omicron variant did, indeed impact holiday travel and is impacting future travel. There’s still more evidence of a travel rebound today. U.S. Transportation Security Administration stats for Wednesday, the day before American Thanksgiving, show that 2,311,979 travellers went through security at U.S. airports. That’s more than double the roughly 1.1 million figure from last year, and nearly 90% of the roughly 2.62 million in 2019. It’s also the largest TSA passenger figure since the start of the pandemic. The Conference Board of Canada and Expedia Group say travel and tourism are definitely on the upswing. In their latest report, the Conference Board found that 86% of Canadians say they miss travelling. Better yet, the numbers who report that COVID-19 is slowing their travel plans is down sharply. Speaking during a zoom session put on by the Discover America Canada Committee, Jennifer Hendry, the conference board’s Senior Research Associate, said that in October of 2020, 62% of Canadians had no travel plans. Passenger activity at Canada’s busiest airport nearly tripled in the third quarter of 2021, a sure sign that travel is on the upswing. The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (“GTAA”) today reported its financial and operating results for the three- and nine-months ended September 30, 2021.  Passenger activity increased 190% for the third quarter of 2021, rising from 1.7 million in the third quarter of last year to 4.7 million this year. Domestic traffic rose from 1.1 million to 2.9 million in the quarter, an increase of 165.3%, while international traffic leapt from 600,000 to 1.8 million; an increase of 239.4%. Read more
