It looked like things might be improving at Canadian airports, but Sunday was not at all good. A glance at Flight Aware stats shows Toronto Pearson on Sunday (July 31) had 25 cancelled outbound flights (4%) and 238 delays (40%). Last week’s stats were generally around 38% or 39% delays for outbound Pearson flights.  It was pretty much the same on Sunday at Montreal Trudeau, which had eight cancellations (2%) but 119 delays (40%). The Trudeau government says the passport situation is improving, but there’s still work to do. “Canadians deserve access to timely, efficient, and transparent passport delivery services,” said Karina Gould, federal minister for Families, Children and Social Development. “We’re continuing to tackle big challenges in the passport program, and as the summer progresses, thanks to the hard work of Service Canada staff, we continue to see improvements in service delivery. “We are starting to put a dent in the backlog,” Gould said. “Last week, the number of passports issued was higher than at any point since before the pandemic, at 54,312. Lynx Air’s first flight from Edmonton International Airport took to the skies today, marking the commencement of five return services a week from  Edmonton International Airport to Toronto Pearson International Airport and St John’s International Airport. On July 30, 2022, the Edmonton-Toronto service will increase to seven flights per week and Lynx will add Halifax Stanfield International Airport to its Edmonton network with two services a week. Flair Airlines has been making a ton of noise in the Canadian travel marketplace. We should find out tomorrow if that’s going to continue. Officials from the Edmonton-based airline on Wednesday (June 1) are expected to announce the results of a Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) investigation on whether it may continue to fly in Canada.  The Canadian government has been looking into allegations that Flair didn’t meet the conditions to qualify as being Canadian owned. Swoop today will launch non-stop Charlottetown service from Toronto’s Pearson International Airport as it greatly expands its presence in Atlantic Canada. Swoop on Sunday launched its inaugural flight to Charlottetown Airport from Hamilton International Airport. Later Sunday, Swoop operated operate its first non-stop service between Edmonton and Halifax.
