I like to talk about great places to go, but sometimes it’s good to warn people about places they might want to avoid. Not because they’re bad, but because they can get pretty overrun with visitors in the height of tourist season. MSN has an interesting list of 16 places that really don’t need more tourists. Of course, these places have become popular for a reason, so my advice would be go if you wish, but try to visit in the shoulder season or off-season. Not only will your experience be more pleasant, but you’ll also likely save a ton Read more

If all the studies and polls I read are correct, it looks like it will be a very busy summer (in the northern hemisphere) for tourism. The price of flights and the jet fuel surcharges and bag fee hikes we’re seeing could slow things down, but people are travelling in near-record numbers these days. That means things could get pretty crowded in some of the world’s fave destinations. With that in mind, here’s one world traveller’s suggestions on great places to go in late April, May and into early June. I’ll have another, similar list in a week or so. Read more
My travel report for today looks at travel trends for Canadians, as well as what looks like an inevitable, major expansion of the Toronto Island Airport. I’m also debuting a new “Cruise News and Views” section on my blog to help people keep track of the booming cruise industry. And I’ve got a report on Hilton hotels use of artificial intelligence to help travelers make decisions, as well as an update on European travel. CANADIANS CAUTIOUS ABOUT TRAVEL: DOMESTIC TRIPS STILL A PRIORITY According to the Canadian Automobile Association’s Travel Wise survey, more than half of Canadians (51%) now say geopolitical and Read more
MSN has a nice list out of trending travel destinations for this year, including some of my fave places. Here’s a look at what they had to say in their report, as well as some thoughts from yours truly, who’s managed to visit all five (and lives in one of them). JAPAN MSN’s report said Japan “continues to draw travellers who value structure, safety and cultural depth. In 2026, the country’s focus on regional tourism — beyond the usual big-city circuit — makes it even more compelling.” Their story highlighted several great options for exploring the country, including scenic regional Read more
A new study from KAYAK finds shoulder season is bringing great travel deals for Canadians. Between the heat of summer and the chill of winter, shoulder season marks a time for peak travel perks with off-peak prices, KAYAK officials said in a study released today (Oct. 9). I’ve often argued that the fall is the best time to visit Europe, as crowds are down and the weather not as hot as summer. The fact there are bargains to be had on flights makes autumn travel all the more attractive. KAYAK says both domestic (-20%) and international (-11%) flights are cheaper Read more
